Women We Admire is pleased to announce The Top 50 Women Leaders of San Antonio for 2022. Both past and present, women have been an integral part of shaping the city. Many historical women have started their roots in the city, such as Emma Tenayuca, who is known for her role of advocating for the suffering of low-class workers and leading a strike of nearly 12,000 individuals when she was just 22 years old. This year’s awardees follow in her footsteps, driving change and smashing barriers of inequality within the workplace. We acknowledge these women for their tenacity, strength, and determination year after year. Our awardees are experts in their field and span nearly all industries including energy, education, finance, engineering, and more.

Among this year’s awardees is Licia Shreves, Vice President of Transwestern, who works directly with physicians to find the ideal location for their commercial real estate needs; Sasha Begum, the Founding Partner of Begum Pelaez-Prada, who utilizes her sharp analytical skills and a strong business background to offer comprehensive and reliable legal counsel; and Sharyn Ford, the Vice President of Global Talent for Owens & Minor, who uses her 17 years of experience leading talent management and development initiatives and teams for Fortune 200 companies.

This year’s awardees have worked tirelessly in their roles and are forging a path for future women leaders as did those before them. Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of The Top 50 Women Leaders of San Antonio for 2022.

1. Stephanie Hall
Valero Energy

Stephanie Hall is the Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Valero Energy. Valero Energy Corporation, through its subsidiaries, is an international manufacturer and marketer of transportation fuels, other petrochemical products, and power. Valero subsidiaries employ approximately 10,500 people, and assets include 16 petroleum refineries with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 3 million barrels per day, 10 ethanol plants with a combined production capacity of 1.2 billion gallons per year, and a 50-megawatt wind farm. Valero is a Fortune 500 company based in San Antonio. Hall has over 25 years of experience. She began her career in 1997.

Before joining Valero Energy, Hall was a commercial and litigation attorney at
Strasburger & Price, LLP. She graduated from Texas Tech University School of Law with a JD and from Stephen F. Austin State University with an undergraduate degree.

2. Carol Bellinger
LJA Engineering

Carol Bellinger is the Vice President for Central Texas Public Infrastructure directing the Right of Way Division at LJA Engineering. She has worked in the Right of Way (ROW) profession for over 38 years managing large scale public infrastructure projects across the nation. She is on the forefront of current technology solutions and approaches such as best practices, quality control and risk management. Bellinger builds, directs, and manages right of way teams for public infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, environmental, public works, water transmission, and transportation projects including highway, transit, rail, high speed rail, commuter rail, airports, and ports ensuring compliance across all realms.

In addition to her roles with LJA Engineering, Bellinger is a licensed real estate broker in Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, and Utah. She previously worked with HDR in various roles including real estate services director and associate vice president.

3. Sharon Miller
Bank of America

Sharon Miller is the President of Small Business and Head of Specialty Banking and Lending for Bank of America. Her roles include overseeing consumer vehicle lending and the lending officers dedicated to supporting Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and Private Bank clients. In addition, she is a member of the company’s management operating committee. Miller’s team provides a full range of financial products and services to ensure business owners, wealth management clients and consumers receive the industry’s leading client experience via a nationwide network of lending and banking professionals and award-winning digital capabilities.

Under her leadership, Bank of America has been recognized as the #1 small business lender and has consistently retained and grown its #1 business deposit market share. During her tenure, small business has been recognized as the best digital platform for entrepreneurs with the highest digital adoption amongst clients in the industry. Miller has been named to American Banker’s “Most Powerful Women to Watch in Banking” for the last three consecutive years. She appears regularly on national and local media to discuss the state of the U.S. small business market and advocates for the nation’s entrepreneurs as the engine that drives the U.S. economy.

4. Michelle Tays
USAA

Michelle Tays began her professional career over 24 years ago. Today, she is the Assistant Vice President in Application Development of USAA. USAA provides banking, insurance, and investment to the military community. The mission of the association is to facilitate the financial security of its members, associates, and their families through provision of a range of highly competitive financial products and services. In doing so, USAA seeks to be the provider of choice for the military community. It’s their dedication that has helped them grow to more than 35,000 employees.

Tays graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio with an MS and undergraduate degree in information systems.

5. Sharyn Ford
Owens & Minor

Sharyn Ford is the Vice President of Global Talent for Owens & Minor. Owens & Minor is a global healthcare solutions company that incorporates product manufacturing, distribution support and innovative technology services to deliver significant and sustained value across the breadth of the industry – from acute care to patients in their home. Aligned to its mission of empowering their customers to advance healthcare, more than 15,000 global teammates serve over 4,000 healthcare industry customers. A vertically-integrated, predominantly Americas-based footprint enables Owens & Minor to reliably supply its self-manufactured surgical and PPE products. Ford has over 35 years of experience. She began her career in 1987.

Before joining Owens & Minor, Ford was an owner and CTO at Strategic Visions International, and before that, a director of talent management at Masco Contractor Services. Earlier in her career she worked with Colgate Palmolive as an account manager. Ford graduated from Rollins College with a master’s in human resources and from the University of Florida with an undergraduate degree in economics.

6. Caroline Tucker
Navy Federal Credit Union

Caroline Tucker began her professional career over 23 years ago. Today, she is the Vice President of Member Experience Transformation of Navy Federal Credit Union. Navy Federal Credit Union is the world's largest credit union with over 10 million members, over $149 billion in assets and over 23,000 employees. At their campuses in Virginia and Florida, and in their more than 345 branches, they serve the men and women of the Armed Forces, Department of Defense, veterans and their families. Tucker first got her start in 1999 as in e-commerce and bank operations at USAA. Tucker graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University with an MBA in finance and from the University of Texas with an undergraduate degree in international business management.

7. Danielle Kuwamura
The One Beauty Bar

Danielle Kuwamura is an entrepreneur, investor, media personality, philanthropist and beauty maven who has taken her clients internal beauty with the “The One” Custom make-up line and “The One Beauty Bar” and propelled it to new levels of external elegance for people around the world. With her avant-garde style, signature approach, and exceptional skills as an artist and as a rising businessperson, her passion is to still help business women shape their image and to help others take the approach of Beauty from the inside out. She proves that her professional instincts transcend the realm of beauty and can transform people and their lives.

Her work has been featured by local network programs, magazines, trade shows, and in online publications. She captivates audiences and has gained a loyal online following. In addition, she
has a passion for helping others with growing their businesses as well with her consulting services. Over the last 11 years, she has worked with the veritable who’s who of the industry. Her son Aiden is her pride and joy and she enjoys broadening her horizons by traveling and giving back to charities.

8. Erica Noriega
Frost Bank

Erica Noriega is the Senior Vice President of Frost Bank. She first joined the company in 1989. Frost provides banking, investments, and insurance services to businesses and individuals throughout Texas. Founded in 1868, Frost is one of the 50 largest U.S. banks by asset size. At Frost, everything they do is aimed at making customers’ lives better. They do it by creating and delivering great experiences to them every time they interact. Through teamwork, collaboration, and a commitment from everyone involved, they’ve succeeded in that goal, time and time again. They are incredibly proud of the results of technology that helps them serve its customers, industry-leading security that inspires confidence, and a quick and agile workforce that serves its customers in ways no other bank can.

Noriega earned a Business Process Management certificate and Certified Scrum Master certificate.

9. Cathy Haffner
Texas Capital Bank

Cathy Haffner began her professional career nearly 37 years ago. Today, she is the Senior Vice President for Private Wealth Advisors of Texas Capital Bank. Texas Capital Bank is a commercial bank headquartered in Dallas. The bank has branches located in every major city in Texas. Equipped with experience-based insights and a proven record of implementing custom solutions for clients, Texas Capital helps their clients with a suite of business lending, investing, and financial management services. The bank offers many business deposit products and services, including commercial checking accounts, lockbox accounts, and cash concentration accounts, as well as other treasury management services.

Haffner first got her start in 1985 as a VP at Bank of America - Seafirst Bank. From there, she went on to U.S. Bancorp, before eventually rising to become the president and CEO at Haffner Group LLC, her most recent position prior to joining Texas Capital Bank. Haffner graduated from Stanford University Graduate School of Business with an executive MBA, and from Seattle University with an undergraduate degree.

10. Licia Shreves
Transwestern

Licia Shreves is a Vice President with Transwestern. The privately held Transwestern companies have been delivering a higher level of personalized service and innovative real estate solutions since 1978. Through an integrated, customized approach that begins with good ideas, the firm drives value for clients across commercial real estate services, development, and investment management. Operating from 33 U.S. offices, Transwestern extends its platform capabilities globally through strategic alliance partners whose unique geographic, cultural, and business expertise fuels creative solutions. Shreves has over 15 years of experience. She began her career in 2007.

Before joining Transwestern, Shreves was a manager and support broker at Duphorne Corporate Realty/Alamo Heights Realty Advisors. She graduated from University of Maryland in Stuttgart, Germany with an undergraduate degree.

11. Michelle Fernandez
Broadway Bank

Michelle Fernandez is the Vice President and VOC Program Leader of Broadway Bank. Broadway Bank is a multi-billion-dollar financial services organization with locations throughout south central Texas. Founded in 1941, Broadway has evolved from a small neighborhood bank into the largest independently-owned bank headquartered in San Antonio. The bank specializes in business banking, private banking, and wealth management. Broadway Bank is a proud member of the FDIC. Fernandez has 18 years in the financial services industry. She began her career in 2004.

Before joining Broadway Bank, Fernandez was a lead member feedback analyst at USAA. Earlier in her career she worked with Firstmark Credit Union as an assistant manager. Fernandez graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio with an undergraduate degree in business administration.

12. Sasha Begum
Begum Pelaez-Prada

Sasha Begum is the Founding Partner of Begum Pelaez-Prada. She founded the company in 2016. Their firm represents companies of all sizes, from startups to multi-billion-dollar publicly traded companies, in a variety of areas, including human resources, shareholder agreements, cross-border transactions, mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. They also assist clients with general corporate needs, including corporate compliance, general corporate planning, and representation, and have worked on the preparation of proposals for clients participating in public tenders for large projects in various countries around the world.

Previously, Begum was an associate general counsel at Cardtronics and before that an associate at Baker & McKenzie. Begum earned a JD from American University Washington College of Law, a JD from Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio, and an undergraduate degree in psychology and philosophy from Tufts University.

13. Linda Hummel
SWBC

Linda Hummel began her professional career over 47 years ago. Today, she is the Chief Executive Officer in the Employee Benefits Consulting Group of SWBC. Since 1976, SWBC has been providing a wide range of insurance, mortgage, and investment services to financial institutions, individuals, and businesses. Headquartered in San Antonio, with offices across the country, SWBC is committed to providing quality products, outstanding service, and customized solutions in all 50 states.

Hummel first got her start in 1975 as a director of community service in public relations at
Trinity University. From there, she went on to FirstCity Bank Corporation, before eventually rising to become the CEO at Humana, her most recent position prior to joining SWBC.

14. Lori Castillo
NatureSweet

Lori Castillo is the Vice President of Marketing of NatureSweet. She first joined the company in 2014 as a senior brand manager. NatureSweet, based in San Antonio, Texas, is the leading grower of premium fresh tomatoes in North America under the NatureSweet brand. As the number one brand of tomatoes in the U.S., their growing operations comprise over 1,000 acres of greenhouse facilities and proudly employ over 5,000 associates. Its products are grown year-round in the Sierra Madre foothill and valley regions of Mexico.

Previously, Castillo was a brand manager and Rite Aid customer team marketing manager at
Procter & Gamble and before that a VP of activities at Texas A&M Club of Maryland. Earlier in her career she worked with Retail Financial Services as a telesales unit manager. Castillo earned an MBA in strategy and marketing from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business and an undergraduate degree in management and international business from Texas A&M University - Mays Business School.

15. Carol Severyn
Frost Bank

Carol Severyn began her professional career nearly 29 years ago. Today, she is a Group Executive Vice President, Chief Risk Officer, and Auditor of Frost Bank. Frost provides banking, investments, and insurance services to businesses and individuals throughout Texas. Founded in 1868, Frost is one of the 50 largest U.S. banks by asset size. Through teamwork, collaboration, and a commitment from everyone involved, the bank has succeeded in delivering great experiences to their clients, time and time again.

Severyn graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio with an undergraduate degree in business administration.

16. Rebecca Herrera
Southside ISD

Rebecca Herrera has 20 years of experience in the K-12 education system and 13 of those years in administrative positions. She provides guidance, direction, and leadership development to staff members as well as other principals. Herrera is currently with Southside ISD where she is the Principal of Menchaca Early Childhood Center, which opened its doors in 2018. Her responsibilities include supervising over 100 staff members, 800 students, maintaining and reconciling the budget, and representing the school in various inter-school events. Herrera and Menchaca ECC have been featured in various media coverages, as well as hosting their own mini documentary with Spectrum News.

Herrera has led the implementation of new initiatives, such as Additional Days School Year and best practices for teaching and learning. She is also an appointed board member of two well-known organizations: Texas Elementary Principal Supervisor Association (TEPSA-ESC 20) and Texas Association of Administrators and Supervisors of Programs for Young Children (TAASPYC). Herrera is an ideal leader to mentor and coach aspiring and new principals and/or educators. She holds a bachelor's degree in business management, a master’s in curriculum and instruction, and a PhD in educational leadership.

17. Nicole Pauley
3M

Nicole Pauley is the Director IT Manager and Infrastructure PMO of 3M. She first joined the company in 2019 in program management and IT infrastructure portfolio management. 3M operates as a diversified technology company, manufacturing more than 55,000 products, including adhesives, abrasives, laminates, passive fire protection, dental and orthodontic products, electronic materials, medical products, car-care products, electronic circuits, and optical films. The company operates in the industrial and transportation, health care, safety, security and protection service, consumer and office, display and graphics and electro, and communications businesses.

Previously, Pauley was an IT portfolio manager at Acelity and before that a CEO at Pauley Consulting. Earlier in her career she worked with the United States Air Force as an E-5. Pauley earned an MBA in project management from Capella University and an undergraduate degree in public administration from the University of Phoenix.

18. Rosa Santana
Santana Group

Rosa Santana began her professional career over 41 years ago. Today, she is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Santana Group. The Santana Group of companies provide transformational outsourcing solutions to organizations across all industries. Santana has been a driving force within the U.S./Mexico staffing industry for over 35 years and is recognized internationally as a human capital solutions expert. She is a fearless leader who harnesses her passion to successfully create and develop companies through impeccable client service and innovative outsourcing solutions.

Santana first got her start in 1981 as a VP at Kelly Services, Inc. From there, she went on to Kelly Staff Leasing, before eventually rising to become the SVP of the Southwest Zone at Westaff, her most recent position prior to joining Santana Group. Santana graduated from El Paso Community College with an undergraduate degree in business.

19. Lauren Ramon
En Su Casa Caregivers

Lauren Ramon is the Chief Operating Officer of En Su Casa Caregivers. En Su Casa is a leading provider of home health services. Founded in 2002, their in-home care programs serve people in need of assistance with daily living with integrity, trust, and compassion. Headquartered in San Antonio, En Su Casa also serves Uvalde and Eagle Pass counties and the surrounding areas. En Su Casa Caregivers is family-owned and operated. Its team has provided over 19 years of the highest quality home care services, centered on their core values of integrity, trust, and compassion. Ramon has over 10 years of experience. She began her career in 2012.

Before joining En Su Casa Caregivers, Ramon worked with Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. Ramon graduated from American University.

20. Maria Zannes

CyPath® Lung has the potential to dramatically increase overall diagnostic accuracy leading to increased survival, fewer unnecessary invasive procedures and lower patient anxiety and medical costs. Zannes has over 44 years of experience. She began her career in 1978.

Before joining bioAffinity, Zannes was a CEO and director at Biomoda, Inc. and before that a principal at The Zannes Firm. Earlier in her career she worked with Congressman Charles Wilson as a legislative assistant and press secretary. Zannes graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a JD and from The University of New Mexico with an undergraduate degree in journalism.

21. Lisa Baty
Firstmark Credit Union

Lisa Baty began her professional career over 23 years ago. Today, she is the Chief of Staff of Firstmark Credit Union. Firstmark Credit Union (formerly San Antonio Teachers Credit Union) is a federally insured, member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative. The first state-chartered credit union in San Antonio was founded by educators in 1932 and changed its name to Firstmark Credit Union in October 2002. Baty first got her start in 1998 as a teacher and director of the K4 Department at First Baptist Academy of Universal City. From there, she went on to Community Bible Church San Antonio as administrative assistant in the Day School, her most recent position prior to joining Firstmark Credit Union. Baty graduated from Liberty University with an undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies.

22. Ashley Landers
Texas Creative

Ashley Landers is the Vice President in Client Services of Texas Creative (TXC), San Antonio's largest advertising agency with full digital and traditional teams under one roof. Texas Creative was built with a graphic design and brand identity backbone. In the past several years, TXC's clients have relied on them for their expanding digital marketing needs, and their broad abilities have enabled them to provide one-source solutions for branding, advertising, and website development. Whether it's on-line or off-line, their in-house team can provide cohesive and consistent tools for the marketing toolbox. Texas Creative has planned and produced over 2,200 events for Chase, HD Radio, USA Football, Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and Rackspace, grand openings, and more. With a national network of part time employees and subcontractors their work is reliable, on time and on budget. Landers has over 13 years of experience. She began her career in 2009.

Before joining Texas Creative, Landers was a group account director at Bromley Communications. Landers graduated from Texas State University with an undergraduate degree in mass communication and Spanish.

23. Lisa Kahn-Smith
Sendero Wealth Management

Lisa Kahn-Smith is the Chief Compliance Officer of Sendero Wealth Management. Sendero Wealth Management is a private wealth management firm that provides personalized financial advice to clients, many of whom have complex financial needs. Sendero ensures their financial guidance is in the best interest of their clients, and that their client’s financial goals and objectives are their top focus. Kahn-Smith has over 22 years in the investment management industry. She began her career in 2000.

Before joining Sendero Wealth Management, Kahn-Smith was an operations manager and assistant CCO at Redstone Consulting in San Antonio.

24. Jenifer Brown
Sendero Wealth Management

Jenifer Brown began her professional career over 32 years ago. Today, she is the Vice President of Strategic Partnerships of Sendero Wealth Management, a private wealth management firm composed of independent thought leaders. Sendero Wealth Management offers investment advice, wealth management and personalized strategies for families. They offer unbiased advice and personalized investment strategies to help protect, preserve, and grow wealth responsibly. Brown first got her start in 1990 as a relocation director at sachoicerelo.com. From there, she went on to McCombs Enterprises before eventually rising to become a branch manager and escrow officer at Capital Title of Texas, her most recent position prior to joining Sendero Wealth Management. Brown graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word with an undergraduate degree in marketing.

25. Kimberly Ford

Kimberly Ford is the Founder and President of theKFORDgroup. theKFORDgroup has been meeting the public accounting needs of San Antonio area businesses since 1976. Over the years, the firm has distinguished itself in three very exciting areas including forensicaccounting and litigation support, entrepreneurial business advisory services and individual tax planning, and consulting services. In these areas of accounting, theKFORDgroup’s ability to work hand-in-hand with their clients to help them interpret financial data and use it as a foundation for good decisions has earned them praise. 26. Marilyn Webber
Trailblazer Films

Marilyn Webber is the President of Trailblazer Films. She first joined the company in 1992. Trailblazer is an Emmy-winning full-service entertainment, production, postproduction and sound studio, founded by former Lyrick Corporation CFO Tom Waring and Rick Duffield, creator of the PBS series Wishbone. Their recipe for success is great people, collaborating to tell great stories.

Previously, Webber was an associate chair of media at The Art Institute of San Antonio. Webber earned an MFA in screenwriting from The American Film Institute and an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma.

27. Brandy Ferguson
Scout Energy

Brandy Ferguson is the Vice President of Human Resources of Scout Energy. She first joined the company in 2015. Scout Energy Partners is an upstream energy investment group. They are a private energy investment manager, focused on providing upstream oil and gas investments for institutional partners. Their strategy focuses on sourcing, acquiring, optimizing, and developing high-PDP, mature, long-lived producing conventional assets in specific geographies in the contiguous United States. The Scout fund is designed for institutional limited partners, including academic endowments, public and private retirement plans, non-profit foundations, health care systems, multi- and single-family offices, funds-of-funds, and insurance pools.

Previously, Ferguson was a HR and operations management consultant and before that a director in HR and corporate initiatives at Authentix. Earlier in her career she worked with Knowledge Learning Corporation as a program specialist. Ferguson earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from Southern Methodist University.

28. Janet Holliday
The CE Group

Janet Holliday is the President and CEO of The CE Group. At The CE Group, they believe that in today's busy environment, experience-driven experiences are the most direct way for consumers and corporations to connect on every level with a brand and organization. Holliday has over 32 years of experience. She began her career in 1990.

Holliday graduated from The University of Texas at Austin.

29. Brenda Johnson

They are a woman-owned small business enterprise with offices in San Antonio and Austin, Texas.

Johnson graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with an undergraduate degree in business.

30. Tammy Zink

Tammy Zink began her professional career 24 years ago. Today, she is the Vice President of Sales of Bella Vista Homes. Bella Vista Homes has been building homes focused on affordability and modern conveniences in the greater San Antonio area of Texas since 2005. Their homes can be found in well-located communities that can boost the value of a home buyer’s investment. Zink first got her start in 1998 as a director of marketing at HomeBanc Mortgage Corporation. From there, she went on to Richmond American Homes before eventually rising to become the VP of sales and marketing at Century Communities, her most recent position prior to joining Bella Vista Homes. Zink graduated from Westminster College with an undergraduate degree in history.

31. Dominique Phillips

In 1996, then Governor George W. Bush appointed her as Chair and Commissioner for the Texas Workforce Commission, where she served until 2008. During her tenure, she oversaw the consolidation of 28 programs from 10 different state agencies to form a $1.2 billion agency with responsibility for services involving federal programs from the U.S Department of Labor, Health, and Human Services, and two other federal agencies. In 2007, Rath was nominated by President George W. Bush as Assistant Secretary of Administration for Children and Families at U.S. Health and Human Services. During this time, she became recognized as a national leader in workforce development, forging partnerships with economic development and educational entities to meet the workforce needs of Texas businesses. A physical therapist by background, Rath attended TCU, and graduated from UTMB-Galveston.

O’Reilly started her career in 1987 with Marriott Hotels & Resorts after graduating with a BA in Business at Texas State University. She worked in 8 hotels in 6 cities within 19 years and then began working with Hyatt Hotels and Resorts in 2006. After nine years with Hyatt, O’Reilly transitioned to HelmsBriscoe where she has excelled and earned their prestigious President’s Club Award for numerous years. She uses her extensive knowledge of the inner workings of hotels, negotiation skills and contracting along with her experience working with CVBs and DMOs to help advise and represent her 30+ clients. She also assists with talent acquisition providing a platform and mentoring others to be successful in the San Antonio area.
