Alison was working as a marketing director in the experiential marketing space in 2017 when her first child was born, a son named Finn. Within weeks of his birth, it was discovered that Finn had bilateral retinal detachments making him completely blind. After a period of grief, acceptance, and adjustment to this unexpected diagnosis for her child, she then began to embrace her son’s disability and forged ahead not only as his mother but as his advocate. Learning that her state did not have vision-specific providers working in early intervention, she used her knowledge and background in education policy to fight for and secure the services her family had a right to, and most importantly, needed in order to best support their son.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, Alison’s work travel was halted and she began to realize that although her advocacy had been successful for her own son, there were likely hundreds of other families across her state who did not know their rights or did not have the emotional bandwidth to advocate for their own children with a visual impairment. At this time, she decided to go back to school to learn braille and learn how to help other families like her own. She attended the University of Kentucky’s master’s education program in visual disabilities and became a certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI). Simultaneously she met another mom in Nashville who had experienced a very similar journey in advocating for her son. Together these two moms on a mission decided to fill the void in Tennessee’s early intervention system to bring specialized and seamless services and support to families like their own.

Founded in 2020 by Alison Clougherty and Stacy Cornwall, Blind Early Services TN now serves more than 200 families across the state. Through their three programs, BEST Start (direct early intervention services by certified vision professionals provided in the home or community), BEST Together (support, connections, and resources for client families), and BEST Advocate (training and resources to support families through the transition from early intervention to school-based services) they are proudly providing a comprehensive system of support for families like their own across Tennessee.
