It’s time for a deeper dive into Queen Charlotte from Netflix’s Regency-era drama “Bridgerton.” It has been announced that Guyanese-British actress and singer Golda Rosheuvel will reprise her role in “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” which follows the young queen’s rise to prominence and power and her marriage to King George III of England. The Netflix limited series spin-off will be another Shonda Rhimes vehicle, who also headed the original hit series.

Rosheuvel stars alongside Hugh Sachs, Sam Clemmett and India Ria Amarteifio, who plays the younger version of Queen Charlotte.

“It’s a really humbling experience – you always want your work to be received well by people,” she told the PA news agency. “And for Queen Charlotte to be a fan favourite and then for Shonda Rhimes and Netflix to want to do a deeper dive into this character, it’s great. I feel very proud.”

Rosheuvel was born in 1970 in Guyana to a Guyanese father and an English mother and moved to England when she was five. Prior to Bridgerton, she was primarily known in the U.K. for her theater work and a number of on-screen roles.

Rosheuvel's stage credits include “Porgy and Bess,” “Macbeth,” “The Winter's Tale,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Angels in America,” “Bad Girls: The Musical,” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” In 2018, the out-and-proud actress played a lesbian version of the title role in “Othello.”

Roshevel’s film credits include “Lady Macbeth,” “I Remember You,” and “You’ll Regret It.” She had roles in several television shows, including “Dead Boss,” “Luther,” “Silent Witness,” “Torchwood,” “Casualty,” “Eastenders,” “Mr Stink,” “Holby City and Consuming Passion - 100 Years of Mills and Boon,” “Coronation Street,” “I Live With Models,” “Damned,” and “Rev.”

Rosheuvel is Patron of An Tobar and Mull Theatre, a multi-artform creative hub on the Hebridean island of Mull. For “Bridgerton,” she has been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Last year she accepted an Equality Award at the Human Rights Campaign’s 2022 Greater New York Dinner.

“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” is due for release on Netflix on May 4, 2023.
