Women We Admire is pleased to announce The Top 100 Women Leaders of Connecticut for 2022. These women are celebrated for their contribution to the workforce and their personal accomplishments along the way. Since the beginning of time, women of Connecticut have kept their communities and businesses running despite the barriers that have stood in their way. The state was home to historical women who made it possible for today’s women to thrive in the workplace. Educator and abolitionist Prudence Crandall and woman’s suffrage advocate Isabella Beecher worked tirelessly to eliminate barriers women faced during the 1800s. Their work continued into the twentieth century with other notable women of Connecticut like Ella Grasso, the first woman to be elected as a US governor and Mary Townsend Seymour, champion of African American civil rights. Thanks to their dedication and fight towards equality, women of today are able to prosper across all industries.

Awardee Jamie Gerrits, the VP of Service Operations of Aetna, is known for initiating the optimization of the consumer experience in health insurance by leading enterprise-wide strategic programs to help leverage technology to drive exponential improvements. Meanwhile, Djuana Beamon, the Chief Diversity Officer of People’s United Bank, uses her 20+ years of experience in leading D&I strategies to find new ways to enhance the bank’s cultures and to celebrate unique differences and similarities. Jill Nowacki, the President and CEO of Humanidei + O'Rourke, helps the credit union strengthen its relevance and strategically address the value of human capital in turn creating an environment where they have increased innovation and a stronger succession plan for the future.

1. Laurie Havanec
CVS Health

Laurie Havanec is the EVP and Chief People Officer of CVS Health. She first joined the company in 2021. CVS Health Corporation, a healthcare company that owns CVS Pharmacy, CVS Caremark and Aetna, is headquartered in Rhode Island. They reach people in more ways and improve the health of communities across America through their local presence, digital channels and their nearly 300,000 dedicated colleagues, including more than 40,000 physicians, pharmacists, nurses and nurse practitioners.

Previously, Havanec was an EVP and chief people officer at Otis Elevator Company, and before that a VP at United Technologies. Earlier in her career she worked with UTC Fire & Security in human resources. Havanec earned a JD in law and an undergraduate degree in marketing from the University of Connecticut.

2. Heather Dlugolenski
Cigna

Heather Dlugolenski is a Product VP for Cigna. Cigna, a global health service company, offers health, pharmacy, dental, supplemental insurance and Medicare plans to individuals, families, and businesses. They are one of the largest health insurers in the US and are highly rated by AM Best and the Better Business Bureau. Dlugolenski has over 7 years of experience. She began her career in 2015.

Prior to her current role, Dlugolenski was a market manager, managing director and chief of staff with Cigna. She graduated from the University of Connecticut with an undergraduate degree in English language and literature.

3. Debbie Peterson
Cigna

Debbie Peterson began her professional career 26 years ago. Today, she is the VP of Global Customer Relationship Management of Cigna. Cigna is a multinational managed healthcare and insurance company based in Bloomfield, Connecticut. As a global health service company, Cigna's mission is to improve the health, well-being, and peace of mind of those they serve by making health care simple, affordable, and predictable.

Peterson first got her start in 1996 as a senior marketing manager at AT&T. From there, she went on to Allstate before eventually rising to become a customer relationship marketing director at American Family Insurance, her most recent position prior to joining Cigna. Peterson graduated from Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management with an MBA and from Wittenberg University with an undergraduate degree in education.

4. Jamie Gerrits
Aetna

Jamie Gerrits began her professional career 13 years ago. Today, she is the VP of Service Operations of Aetna. As one of the nation's leading diversified health care benefits companies, Aetna provides people with information and resources to help them make better informed decisions about their health care, and the financial side of it. Aetna’s health insurance products include medical, pharmaceutical, dental, behavioral health, long-term care, and disability plans, primarily through employer-paid insurance and benefit programs, and through Medicare. Since 2018, the company has been a subsidiary of CVS Health.

Prior to her current role, Gerrits held several positions with Aetna including director of digital and contact center operations, manager of strategic programs and executive director of consumer experience. She also previously founded Mara Solutions LLC, an advising firm to partner with companies to develop strategies to thoughtfully transition to digital operations, adopt a culture of purposeful communications, and optimize the customer experience. Gerrits graduated from Quinnipiac University with an undergraduate degree.

5. Maureen Bowman
Travelers

Maureen Bowman is the AVP of Business Development and International Business Insurance for Travelers. She first joined the company in 2020 as underwriting account executive of financial institutions management liability. Travelers takes on the risk for their customers and provides the coverage they need to protect the things that are important, like their home, car, valuables and business, so they don’t have to worry. It is the second-largest writer of US commercial property casualty insurance, and the sixth-largest writer of US personal insurance through independent agents.

Prior to her current role, Bowman held several other positions with Travelers including senior director of finance, AVP of strategic initiatives and innovation, and underwriting account executive. Bowman earned an undergraduate degree in risk management and insurance from The University of Georgia.

6. Erin Smith
TD Bank Group

Erin Smith is the VP of State and Local Government Affairs of TD. The Toronto-Dominion Bank and its subsidiaries are collectively known as TD Bank Group. They are a Canadian multinational banking and financial services corporation headquartered in Ontario, that serves approximately 22 million customers in a number of locations in key financial centers around the globe. Over 85,000 TD employees represent the strongest team in banking. Smith has nearly 14 years of experience. She began her career in 2008.

Before joining TD, Smith was a state government affairs director of the northeast region at Cigna and before that a corporate foundation officer at Cigna Foundation. Earlier in her career she worked with Connecticut Women's Education and Legal Fund as a research assistant. Smith graduated from the University of Connecticut with a master’s in social work and an undergraduate degree in journalism and sociology.

7. Bozena Thrower
UTC Collins Aerospace

Bozena Thrower began her professional career over 32 years ago. Today, she is a Chief Software Engineer of UTC Collins Aerospace. Collins Aerospace, a Raytheon Technologies subsidiary headquartered in North Carolina, is one of the world's largest suppliers of aerospace and defense products. The company specializes in aerostructures, avionics, interiors, mechanical systems, mission systems, and power and control systems that serve customers across the commercial, regional, business aviation and military sectors.

Thrower graduated from Central Connecticut State University with an undergraduate degree in mathematics and computer science.

8. Linda Cunha
Otis Elevator Company

Linda Cunha is the VP and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel of Otis Elevator Company. She first joined the company in 2016. Otis Elevator Company is the world's leading company that develops, manufactures and markets elevators, escalators, moving walkways, and related equipment. It was founded in 1853 after Elisha Otis invented the elevator safety brake, giving rise to the modern city, transforming how people live and work, and revolutionizing architecture.

Previously, Cunha was a VP and the chief intellectual property counsel at Pratt & Whitney and United Technologies Aircraft Systems. Earlier in her career she worked with Hamilton Sundstrand as a deputy intellectual property counsel. Cunha earned a JD from Albany Law School, a master’s of mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.

9. Kristen McGarry
Pacific Life

Kristen McGarry is the Regional VP of Pacific Life. For more than 150 years, Pacific Life has helped millions of individuals and families with their financial needs through a wide range of life insurance products, annuities, and mutual funds, and offers a variety of investment products and services to individuals, businesses, and pension plans. Pacific Life counts more than half of the 100 largest US companies as its clients and has been named one of the 2021 World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute. McGarry has over 25 years in the financial services industry. She began her career in 1996.

Before joining Pacific Life, McGarry was a regional VP at Transamerica and before that a regional VP at Allstate. Earlier in her career she worked with Travelers as a VP. McGarry graduated from Marist College with an undergraduate degree in finance.

10. Sylvia Guinan
Wells Fargo Advisors

Sylvia Guinan is a First Vice President and Financial Advisor at Wells Fargo Advisors in Essex, Connecticut. Wells Fargo Advisors, a subsidiary of Wells Fargo, is the third largest brokerage firm in the United States with $1.9 trillion retail client assets under management. Guinan has over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry.

Guinan spent her early career in marketing before moving on to become a financial advisor with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, her most recent position before joining Wells Fargo Advisors. In addition to her current role, Guinan is an author, frequent speaker and on the board of trustees for the Williams School. Guinan earned an MBA and an undergraduate degree in marketing from St. John’s University and is a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst.

11. Wendy Mager
Kemper

Wendy Mager is the VP of Business Process Effectiveness with Kemper. The Kemper family of companies is one of the nation’s leading specialized insurers. With approximately $15 billion in assets, Kemper is improving the world of insurance by providing affordable and easy-to-use personalized solutions to individuals, families and businesses through its auto, personal insurance, life and health brands. Kemper serves over 6.6 million policies, is represented by approximately 34,000 agents and brokers, and has approximately 10,000 associates dedicated to meeting the ever-changing needs of its customers. Mager has 22 years in the insurance industry. She began her career in 1990.

Before joining Kemper, Mager was the VP of business process effectiveness at Travelers and before that a director. Earlier in her career she worked with Paradigm Associates as a consultant. Mager graduated from the University of Connecticut with an undergraduate degree in computer science.

12. Djuana Beamon
People's United Bank N.A.

Djuana Beamon is the Chief Diversity Officer of People's United Bank N.A. She first joined the company in 2020. People's United Bank N.A. is a subsidiary of People's United Financial, a diversified, community-focused financial services company headquartered in the Northeast with more than $60 billion in assets. Founded in 1842, People’s United Bank offers commercial and retail banking through a network of over 400 retail locations in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, as well as wealth management and insurance solutions. Beaman has over 20 years of experience.

Previously, Beamon was an executive director of strategic diversity management at Aetna, and before that a VP of diversity and inclusion at Voya Financial. Earlier in her career she worked with Prudential Retirement as a team leader and senior relationship manager associate. In addition to her current roles, Beamon is an advisory council member for Quinnipiac University’s People’s United Center for Women & Business and has previously been active on several boards. Beamon earned an MBA and graduate certificate in human resources management from the University of New Haven and an undergraduate degree in business management from Albertus Magnus College.

13. Robin Chiasson
Allied World

Robin Chiasson is the VP of Programs for Allied World. Allied World Assurance Company Holdings Ltd is a global provider of insurance and reinsurance solutions. The company operates under the brand Allied World and has supported clients, cedents and trading partners with thoughtful service and meaningful coverage since 2001. Chiasson has nearly 26 years in the insurance industry. She began her career in 1996.

Before joining Allied World, Chiasson was a director of professional liability at Guilford Specialty Group. Earlier in her career she worked with Travelers as a senior specialty underwriter. Chiasson graduated from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst with a master’s in education and from Western New England University with an undergraduate degree in arts.

14. Sarah Kowalczyk
Harsco

Sarah Kowalczyk is the VP and Division Counsel of Clean Earth of Harsco. She first joined the company in 2020. Harsco Corporation is a global industrial company based in Pennsylvania that operates in 30 countries and employs approximately 11,000 people worldwide. The company provides industrial services and engineered products that serve large industries, including steel, railways, and energy.

Previously, Kowalczyk was a general counsel and VP of risk management at TRADEBE and before that an attorney at Murtha Cullina LLP. Earlier in her career she worked with Cramer, Alissi and Fontaine as an attorney. Kowalczyk earned a JD from the Hofstra University School of Law and an undergraduate degree in environmental science and political science from Marist College.

15. Jill Nowacki
Humanidei + O'Rourke

Jill Nowacki is the President and CEO of Humanidei + O'Rourke. Humanidei provides comprehensive human capital solutions that help credit unions become workplaces that work for today’s workforce. Credit unions work with Humanidei to integrate their most important asset, their human capital, into organizational growth plans and win the war for talent. Nowacki has over 20 years of experience. She began her career in 2001.

Before joining Humanidei + O'Rourke, Nowacki was a president and CEO at Credit Union League of Connecticut and before that a VP of development at Maps Credit Union. Earlier in her career she worked with Montana Credit Union Network as a director of advocacy and communication. Nowacki graduated from the University of Montana with an MPA and from Carroll College with an undergraduate degree in public relations and communication.

16. Yuan Tao
Oliver Wyman

Yuan Tao is a Principal at the Actuarial Practice of Oliver Wyman. Oliver Wyman is a global leader in management consulting and is part of Marsh McLennan, a $17BN global professional services firm. Oliver Wyman combines deep industry knowledge with specialized expertise in strategy, operations, risk management, and organization transformation. The Actuarial Practice of Oliver Wyman has nearly 500 professionals and is an industry leader in M&A, financial modeling and valuation, and reinsurance.

Tao has over 20 years of actuarial experience and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. At Oliver Wyman, she frequently advises clients on M&A, financial reporting, actuarial modeling, and risk management. Before joining Oliver Wyman in 2016, Tao was an AVP and Actuary at MassMutual Financial Group. She also held actuarial roles with several other insurers including Phoenix Life Insurance Company and ING before joining MassMutual. Tao graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Master of Mathematics in Actuarial Science and from the Renmin University of China with an undergraduate degree in Statistics.

17. Kathy Fischer
University of Connecticut

Kathy Fischer began her professional career 28 years ago. Today, she is the Associate Director of the Women's Center of University of Connecticut. The University of Connecticut is one of America’s top 20 public universities, according to the US News & World Report. The mission of UConn’s Women’s Center is to educate, advocate, and provide support services for the achievement of women’s equity at the university and within the community at large. More specifically, it challenges the status quo that reinforces inequality based on race and gender simultaneously.

Fischer first got her start in 1994 as a coordinator of education and outreach at Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence, before eventually moving onto the Grievance Team at the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA). In addition to her current role, she is the president of the UCPEA. Fischer graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University with an undergraduate degree.

18. Julie Gehring
J Gehring Communication

Julie Gehring is the CEO of J Gehring Communication. She founded the company in 2016. In 2016, Gehring launched J Gehring Communication, a consulting business where she advises organizations on how to enhance corporate social responsibility, leadership and talent development programs.

Previously, Gehring was an associate lecturer of the department of communication studies at the University of Massachusetts - Boston and before that a director of mentoring and community relations at Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center. Earlier in her career she worked with Manatee Civic Center/Powel Crosley Museum as an event coordinator. Gehring earned a doctorate in learning, leadership and education policy from the University of Connecticut, a master’s degree in integrated marketing and communication from Emerson College and an undergraduate degree in communications studies and mass communication/public relations from Towson University.

19. Anne Kenny
Resilient Living PC

Anne Kenny is a President and a Physician with Resilient Living PC. Resilient Living PC is an internal medicine provider established in Connecticut, specializing in internal medicine, specifically geriatric medicine. Kenny has 32 years in the healthcare services industry. She began her career in 1990.

In addition to her roles with Resilient Living PC, Kenny is a professor emerita at the University of Connecticut Health Center and currently practices as a consulting physician. Kenny graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center with an MD.

20. Carolyn Galiette
Ironwood Capital

Carolyn Galiette is the President and Chief Investment Officer of Ironwood Capital. She first joined the company in 1991. Ironwood Capital is a Connecticut-based private equity firm that provides non-control growth capital to middle market companies. Its debt-oriented, national platform has invested more than $900 million in over 95 companies since 2001. Ironwood currently invests in the form of subordinated debt and minority equity in amounts ranging from $8 million to $25 million to support business owners and financial sponsors in growth financings, full and partial recapitalizations, generational transitions and buyouts.

Previously, Galiette was a VP at Aetna Financial Services. Earlier in her career she worked with PaineWebber as an associate. Galiette earned an undergraduate degree in English from Dartmouth College.

21. Susan McFarland
Barnes Group

Susan McFarland is the VP of Health, Safety and Environment for Barnes Group. She first joined the company in 2012 as a director for health, safety and environmental affairs. Barnes Group is a global provider of engineered products, industrial technologies and solutions. The company’s specialized products and services are used in applications, such as aerospace, transportation, manufacturing, healthcare and packaging.

Previously, McFarland was an EH&S director and manager of assurance and compliance at Carrier Corporation and before that a manager of environment, health and safety at Sikorsky Aircraft. Earlier in her career she worked with Pratt & Whitney as an EH&S manager. McFarland earned an MBA from Rensselaer Hartford Graduate Center, a master's degree in environmental science from the University of New Haven, and an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Wesleyan University.

22. Tina Sparrow
OneDigital

Tina Sparrow is the VP of Corporate Development of OneDigital. OneDigital delivers strategic advisory consulting and technology-forward solutions to more than 85,000 employers across the nation. As employee health care, wellness and workplace benefits continue to converge, businesses of all sizes have relied on OneDigital’s exceptional advisory teams for counsel in employee benefits, wellbeing, human resources, pharmacy consulting, property and casualty solutions, as well as the retirement and wealth management services. Sparrow has 36 years of experience. She began her career in 1986.

Before joining OneDigital, Sparrow was a senior account executive at Delta Dental for the New Jersey and Connecticut offices, and before that an account executive at Oxford Health Plans. Earlier in her career she worked with ConnectiCare as an account executive.

23. Lori Szczygiel
Beacon Health Options

Lori Szczygiel began her professional career over 29 years ago. Today, she is the Market President of Beacon Health Options of Connecticut. Beacon is a specialty behavioral health organization serving more than 40 million individuals across the US. The company supports employers, health plans, and government clients as they work to address the needs of specialized groups. As a national leader in the fields of mental and emotional well-being, and employee assistance, Beacon supports individuals, families, and communities on their journey to living the lives they deserve.

Szczygiel first got her start in 1992 as a service specialist at Mental Health Management of America. From there, she went on to MSPCC, before eventually rising to become the SVP of public sector business development and strategy at ValueOptions, her most recent position prior to joining Beacon Health Options. Szczygiel graduated from Anna Maria College with an MA in counseling psychology and an undergraduate degree in music therapy.

24. Dorothy Hammett
Ensign-Bickford Industries

Dorothy Hammett is the Chief Legal Officer of Ensign-Bickford Industries. Ensign-Bickford Industries, founded in 1836, is a privately-owned high technology conglomerate focused in space and defense, pet food science, and biotechnology. They participate in businesses that are relevant to the future of the world and have multigenerational growth prospects. Hammett has 33 years in the mechanical and industrial engineering industry. She began her career in 1989.

Hammett graduated from the Duquesne University School of Law with a JD and from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with an MA in labor and industrial relations and an undergraduate degree in industrial safety management.

25. Elizabeth Mattern
Equitable

Elizabeth Mattern began her professional career over 17 years ago. Today, she is a Regional Vice President for Equitable. Equitable is one of America’s leading financial services companies. Founded originally in 1859, the company’s mission is to help clients secure their financial well-being with advice, protection and retirement strategies for individuals, families and small businesses.

Mattern first got her start in 2004 as a recruitment manager at the University of Connecticut Foundation. From there, she went on to John Hancock Financial Services before eventually moving on to become an internal wholesaler at Eaton Vance, her most recent position prior to joining Equitable. Mattern graduated from the University of Connecticut with an MBA and an undergraduate degree in business administration.

26. Ruth Karchov
Entrespace

Ruth Karchov began her professional career 26 years ago. Today, she is a Managing Partner in the Healthcare Division of Entrespace. Entrespace is a platform that bridges the gap between entrepreneurs and investors with all the necessary IT infrastructure, consultancy, branding, and more, to help their clients build a successful business. Their effort is to make all entrepreneurial resources available to everyone.

Karchov first got her start in 1996 as a modernization program leader at the Federal Department of Transportation, Communication and Housing. From there, she went on to Federal Superintendence of Banking and Insurance before eventually rising to executive leadership development at IBM, her most recent position prior to joining Entrespace. Karchov graduated from Purdue University - Krannert School of Management with an MBA and from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú with an undergraduate degree in law.

27. Crystal Sides
Dime Bank

Crystal Sides is the COO and Director of Compliance and Internal Audit of Dime Bank. The Dime Community Bank is a local, FDIC-insured bank operating since 1864. In August 2017, Dime announced they had been approved as a Small Business Administration (SBA) lender. The launch of their SBA lending program continues the expansion of their business banking division. They recognize that small businesses and entrepreneurs are important to the economic vibrancy of the communities they serve. Sides has nearly 24 years in the banking industry. She began her career in 1998.

Before joining Dime Bank, Sides was an SVP of enterprise risk and product development at Bankers' Bank Northeast and before that an SVP and senior trust officer at Guilford Savings Bank. Earlier in her career she worked with the New England Bank as a technology project officer. Sides graduated from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst with an undergraduate degree in business administration, management and operations.

28. Kristen Olson
Tessitura Network

Kristen Olson began her professional career 11 years ago. Today, she is the VP of Learning and Thought Leadership of Tessitura Network. Tessitura Network enables and inspires arts and cultural organizations of all sizes to achieve their goals by providing continually innovative technology and comprehensive services that improve their efficiency and effectiveness, and by fostering learning, knowledge sharing and community collaboration between peers and organizations. The company refers to itself as "arts enterprise software".

Olson graduated from Bennington College with an MFA and from Yale University with an undergraduate degree in business administration.

29. Anna Malz
Prochimie International

Anna Malz is the President of Prochimie International. She first joined the company in 1999. Prochimie is a full-service supplier of a wide range of chemicals from global affiliates. They were established in 1975 as the sales and marketing representative in the US for major French and Belgian chemical producers.

Previously, Malz was a contractor at the US Department of Agriculture, Foreign Agricultural Service. Malz earned an MBA from the University of Hartford and an undergraduate degree in international relations from Boston University.

30. Diane Lopes
Edelman Financial Engines

Diane Lopes is a VP with Edelman Financial Engines. Since 1986, Edelman Financial Engines has been committed to always acting in the best interest of their clients. In 2018, two of America’s most prominent financial planning and investment management firms, Edelman Financial Services and Financial Engines, merged to become Edelman Financial Engines. Today, Edelman Financial Engines is known as America’s top independent financial planning and investment advisor. Lopes has over 29 years of experience. She began her career in 1993.

Before joining Edelman Financial Engines, Lopes was a VP at Aetna and before that a VP of retirement services and continuous improvement leader at MassMutual Financial Group. Earlier in her career she worked with Cigna as an assistant VP. She is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and a process optimization expert in healthcare, financial services and investment planning processes. Lopes graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with an undergraduate degree in research psychology.

31. Krisha Morander
J. Morrissey

Krisha Morander began her professional career 29 years ago. Today, she is the Vice President of Healthcare and Technology Recruitment of J. Morrissey & Company. Founded in 1986 by Jim and Barbara Morrissey, J. Morrissey has been a recruiting and staffing leader in Connecticut and Massachusetts for over three decades. What began as a grassroots, “out of the kitchen” service, has since grown into a recruiting powerhouse.

Morander first got her start in 1992 as a staffing consultant at CT.StaffingWorks. From there, she went on to All The Best PEOPLE, before eventually rising to recruitment officer for the school of pharmacy at Saint Joseph College, her most recent position prior to joining J. Morrissey. Morander graduated from Saint Joseph College with an undergraduate degree in HR management.

32. Lori Dufficy
Chelsea Groton Bank

Lori Dufficy is the Executive Vice President and Chief Experience and Engagement Officer of Chelsea Groton Bank. She first joined the company in 2011 as an executive vice president and director of sales and service. Chelsea Groton provides personal and business checking and savings, mortgage loans, cash management, and online and retirement planning services to individuals and businesses.

Previously, Dufficy was a VP and regional manager at The Washington Trust Company and before that a small business lending officer at Fleet National Bank. Dufficy earned an undergraduate degree in business administration from Southern New Hampshire University.

33. Mary Blankson
Community Health Center

Mary Blankson is the Chief Nursing Officer of the Community Health Center. She first joined the company in 2005 as a family nurse practitioner. Community Health Center (CHC) is one of the country’s most creative and dynamic providers of primary medical, dental and mental health services to the uninsured and underinsured. It is one of the leading health-care providers in the state of Connecticut, providing comprehensive primary care services in medicine, dentistry, and behavioral health.
