Renowned dancer-choreographer Jean Butler continues to push the boundaries of Irish dance with her latest production, "What We Hold." Butler's journey through the world of dance, from her early experiences in ballet to her pioneering work in contemporary Irish dance, has shaped her unique perspective on movement and storytelling.

Born out of Butler's introspective exploration of her cultural heritage and personal connection to Irish dance, "What We Hold" is a site-specific dance production that merges traditional Irish dance forms with contemporary choreography. Premiering at the Dublin Theatre Festival in October 2022, the production captivated audiences with its innovative approach to storytelling and its celebration of Irish dance history.

Butler's own background in Irish dance, combined with her academic achievements—including a B.A. in Theater and Drama from the University of Birmingham and an M.A. in Contemporary Dance Performance from the Irish World Academy at the University of Limerick—has positioned her as a leading figure in the world of dance.

As the founder and director of Our Steps, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Irish dance, Butler has been instrumental in connecting dancers, teachers, and enthusiasts from around the world. Through initiatives like the Our Steps, Our Story: An Irish Dance Legacy Archive, Butler aims to ensure that the rich history of Irish dance is documented and accessible for future generations.

"What We Hold" received critical acclaim for its immersive storytelling and captivating performances. Her creative process, which emphasizes collaboration and intuition, allowed the production to evolve organically, resulting in a truly unique and impactful experience for audiences.

For the U.S. adaptation of "What We Hold," Butler faced the challenge of reconfiguring the production for a new audience and venue. Collaborating with the Irish Arts Center in New York, she successfully transformed the show for a black box setting, while retaining its intimacy and emotional depth.

The production's success in New York can be attributed to Butler's meticulous attention to detail, from casting and choreography to lighting and costume design. Despite the challenges of restaging the show, she remained true to her original vision, creating a powerful and unforgettable experience for audiences.As audiences walk away from "What We Hold," they are left with a newfound appreciation for the diversity and complexity of Irish dance. 

Butler's commitment to celebrating and archiving Irish dance history has not only redefined the genre but also inspired a new generation of dancers to embrace their cultural heritage with pride.
